Balbina Learns to Swim is the first book in our Safety Series, addressing one of the most critical child safety issues in America. This topic-specific resource combines water safety education with our proven SEL curriculum, helping children develop both life-saving knowledge and emotional resilience.

The Critical Need for Water Safety Education:

Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children ages 1–4 in the United States and the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 5–14 (CDC, 2024).

Over 4,500 people drown each year in the U.S.—approximately 500 more deaths annually compared to 2019. Drowning among children ages 1–4 increased by 28% between 2019 and 2022.

For every child who dies from drowning, another seven children receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries, which can result in severe brain damage and long-term disabilities.
